Dental Implants - Types and Procedure

Dental implants are artificial devices used in dentistry to replace missing teeth. They are typically made of biocompatible titanium, which fuses with the jawbone over time. There are three main types of dental implants:

Endosteal Implants

These are the most common type of implants and are placed directly into the jawbone.

Subperiosteal Implants

These implants are positioned on top of the jawbone but beneath the gums. They are suitable for patients with insufficient bone to support endosteal implants.

Zygomatic Implants

Placed in the cheekbones, zygomatic implants are used for patients with severe upper jaw bone loss.

The choice of implant type depends on individual needs and circumstances, and your dentist will assist in selecting the most suitable one.

The implant procedure involves two stages:

    Implant Placement
  • The implant is surgically inserted into the jawbone. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia or sedation.

  • Abutment and Crown Placement
  • After the implant has fused with the jawbone, a metal abutment is affixed on top of the implant. The abutment serves as a connector for the new crown, which is the artificial tooth visible in your mouth.
  • While the entire implant process may take several months, the results are worth it. Dental implants offer a permanent solution for tooth loss, restoring both function and aesthetics. Some of the benefits include a natural appearance, durability, improved speech and chewing ability, and enhanced self-confidence and quality of life.
If you are considering dental implants, consult with your dentist to discuss the potential risks and benefits. Dental implants are a significant investment but can be a life-changing solution for individuals with missing teeth.
